Bought the small jar of inletting black from Brownell's in the mid '70's. Inletted a couple dozen rifle stocks, plus a bunch of other projects wanting a tolerance indicator. The jar is about 1/2 to 2/3 full and still very useable. Customer sends metal work that is then bedded to a shop pattern. Stock is cut .003 to .007 undersized on the inletting and .030 to .040 oversized on the outside. The customer finishes the inletting of the metal and final shopping. inletting Ok, just dug out one of my older gunsmithing books by Roy Dunlap. He mentions the various methods and claims his best is a cream rouge in a shade of red. He says the best ones are not particularly greasy. Of coarse this is an old book and I am thinking cream rouges have changed through the years.

An easy way to find the high spots is to use a magic marker on the parts to find the tight spots, I hardly ever use any inletting black anymore,a marker is a lot less messy. Hope this helps you a little, the main thing is to have patience and leave it alone and come back to it later if you get disgusted for a while .
