Apr 6, 2024 · A fresh wave of fat pre-spawn male smallmouth bass pulled up on Lake St. Clair last week. Lots of 2.75-3.5lb fish with occasional four pounders mixed in. Lots of numbers right now on shallow flats in 5-9 ft of water, feeding on small 2-3” perch (see picture).

That wind/rain last week tore this lake up good. Several factors play key roles into smallies moving from the lake to the St. Clair river. Bait, cover, current, & water temp. Many will say smallie migration main driving force is water temp.....well in a way it is but not exactly. First and fore most is bait fish. No bait = no smallies moving into the river. Water temp is an indicator.As summer begins and fish move offshore, a drop-shot rig, tube, Ned Rig, and spybait are among the best baits. Much fishing is done in relatively shallow water, even on a lake as large as St. Clair.
